Design: Framework Development Plan

"Wind, Water, Passage"

To be considered for a Metro District in the City of Aurora, Colorado, a strong theme for the community is required within the guidelines of the Framework Development plan.

For this particular community, the developer wanted a frontier style, homestead, ranch quality. In planning the theme, we thought about the elements that would have been integral to life on the plains in a homestead in Colorado. We created the theme of "Wind, Water, and Passage" for the three neighborhoods planned for this parcel of land because pioneers' diaries and tales highlight these elements as some of the most conspicuous, and taking a leading role in shaping their futures on the frontier.

The Wind neighborhood (above) highlights open prairie, featuring grasses, sparse trees, windmill feature, and spinning or twirling public art.

The Water neighborhood (above) features a dry creekbed, lush water's edge plantings, and bridge crossings. Public art is water-related and educational.

The Passage neighborhood (above) embraces acknowledgement of the passing of time and history. This neighborhood includes a dual-walk system, reminiscent of wagon trail roads, mile markers, orchards to represent cyclical time, and public art relating to history or time, such as interactive sundials or a celestial observation feature.
