Design: The San Francisco Landscape Garden Show

Show Theme: "Gardens of the Silver Screen." Design to reflect the character of a cinematic piece.

This exhibit was created by the members of the UC Davis ASLA Student Chapter in 1997.

The Exhibit: "The Usual Suspects: Clues to the Mystery of What to Plant."

"This exhibit was a commentary on the contemporary landscape design trend of repeatedly using the same handful of plants. From malls to suburban lawns, these plants are used because they are easy to maintain and relatively inoffensive.

The problem with this approach to landscape design is that too much of the landscape is writhing with normalcy. As a solution we should look at plants that are just as easy to maintain and, at the very least, a departure from The Usual Suspects."

The exhibit included a plant reference brochure for visitors to take home.

Sarah Washburn's role in creation of the exhibit was Committee Chairperson. She designed and drew the plans for exhibition entry, directed and participated in construction, and coordinated take-down.
